Pattern A
Solid primary color (black) with trim (gold).
Pattern B1
Transition from a dark primary color (black) to a light secondary color (red) with trim (gold).
Pattern B2
Transition from a light secondary color (red) to a dark primary color (black) with trim (gold).
Pattern C
1-4 thread stripes of both the primary (black) and secondary color (red) in the center of the primary color wrap with trim (gold).
Pattern D
Strips (1/3 of wrap) of a light secondary color (red) mixed with a dark primary color (black) in center of dark color wrap with trim (gold).
Pattern E
One stripe of the trim color (gold), followed by two stripes of the primary color (black), followed by three stripes of both the primary and secondary color (red), followed by one stripe of the trim color, followed by the primary color.
Pattern F
Several stripes of the secondary color (red) in the center of the dark primary color (black) wrap with trim (gold).

On most heavier duty rods I do not use color preserver.  There are many reasons for this but primarily because it does not work well with the finish I use on heavier duty rods.  Because of this I only use Regular Black thread, Metallic threads (any color), and/or NCP thread on these types of rods.

"Heavier Duty" rods are usually rods that are designed for fishing 20-30 lb. test or higher - depending on the type of rod.

I use metallic threads for trim, stripes, and accents only.  I do not use metallic thread for the primary wraps because it is much more difficult to work with and it is considerably weaker than regular thread.

Combinations

For most rods I highly recommend using a single dark primary color with one or more metallic colors as trim.  This type of color combination usually come out looking the best.  Depending on the type of rod I will only build rods using a single dark color along with metallic trim.

Here are some of my favorite color combinations I have used on my own rods.  I have organized them based on the primary color.

Black (0001):
